Another week, another day dedicated to celebrating something random, unexpected and fun! If you’re reading this on July 24th, HAPPY NATIONAL TEQUILA DAY to you! If you’re not? Here’s a lovely tequila cocktail recipe for you – made with the very finest of Mexican spirits: Casamigos Tequila. Produced in Jalisco with natural agave, you’ll also see there’s a little signature on every bottle – just George Clooney’s autograph, you know. Oh yes, everyone’s favourite silver fox part-owns Casamigos Tequila. Does Clooney know much about tequila? You betcha.

“We love tequila–on the rocks, by the shot, and at times, straight from the bottle. Tequila-filled nights with friends is how Casamigos was born. Our idea was to make the best-tasting, smoothest tequila whose taste didn’t have to be covered up with salt or lime. So we did.” Basically – forget those ideas of painful shots and even more painful mornings after: this stuff is miles away from that! So to celebrate National Tequila Day, we’d like to suggest a twist on the traditional Paloma cocktail – a deliciously fresh, summery mix of pink grapefruit, vanilla, lime and mint.

We like our cocktails simple, so there’s no complicated ingredients or processes here – and you can easily make lots of this, punchbowl-style if you like. When you think of tequila cocktails, it’s probably the Margarita that comes to mind, but – served tall with lots of ice – the Paloma is a much more sophisticated creature. The sharp tang of pink grapefruit means that this cocktail works well served with food too, bonus! Dial up the vanilla or add a little agave syrup if you like your cocktails sweeter. Other options? Throw in salt, a little green chilli or a twist of black pepper if you’re feeling adventurous – they all add an intriguing edge here. Blanco (rather than reposado) tequila works best, and Casamigos describes theirs as: “crisp and clean with hints of citrus, vanilla and sweet agave, with a long smooth finish.” Yes please!

Casamigos Tequila // Pink Grapefruit
Lime // Soda
Vanilla extract // Mint

Juice the pink grapefruits – you’ll need one per cocktail. Fresh does taste so much better than ready-made, even if it is a little bit messy if you don’t have a juicer. Add ice, grapefruit juice, a couple of drops of natural vanilla extract, juice of half a lime and tequila (we use about one measure – 35ml), then shake well. Fill a tall glass with ice and strain over ice cubes. Add mint and garnish with fresh fruit – raspberries or strawberries look pretty here. Cheers!
