Generally women tend to wind down professional matters while pregnant, but not so for Dr Lamees Hamdan. Originally trained as a doctor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland,  Hamdan decided to launch her own skincare brand when she couldn’t find products that she wanted to use while pregnant. Conscious of skin’s sensitivity to synthetic ingredients during pregnancy, Hamdan set out to create a luxurious natural skincare range – and so, Shiffa was (sorry!) born.

Dr Lamees

Initially available at Dubai’s Six Senses spa and then at Sephora, Shiffa quickly outsold all the major brands available at the beauty emporium. Fast forward to today, and Shiffa is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning brand, driven by Hamdan’s passion for natural, beautiful and holistic products that really work. We found out a little about the inspiring woman behind the brand…

Motivation for me is all about…

Success and achievement. I was brought up always wanting to achieve something, and when you have a goal, you have motivation. Motivation drives creativity and inspires new ideas. I would always want to be motivated about something, whether it is capturing a particular scent in the middle of a flower field, or getting my black belt at Shao Lin Kung Fu.

Success means…

Doing something I am proud of – nothing more, nothing less. It is never about money, fame or celebrity, it is about being proud of who you are and what you have accomplished. Success should be synonymous with happiness, and if you base success on other things, you will find it doesn’t bring you happiness.

I couldn’t have got there without…

My Mother and Father. To this day they are my anchor and support. Unconditional love, when you are really battling something, is your guiding light and keeps you strong. I hope to do the same with my children. To this day my parents babysit all my four children when I travel for work. I couldn’t have had my career and my family without their help.

I always start my day with…

A green juice – I know, I am sure there are chicer ways to start a day. Parsley, fennel, ginger, kale, beetroot, flax seed, coconut oil and anything else I happen to have in the fridge – its not for the fainthearted. Then I eat a rainbow throughout the rest of the day, and a few Porcelana chocolate pieces by Pierre Marcolini (who has replaced Jean Paul Hevin as my new chocolate obsession)

When I don’t feel inspired I…

Feel depressed. I love to day dream, have ideas and look at beautiful things, whether it is a beautiful person, a sculpture or even a car… I love beauty in all its forms. I also love to go to the cinema, seeing what imagination can bring to life motivates me to bring my own dreams into reality, after all, a movie starts with a dream…

The landscape for women in business today looks like…

A candy store, where we can take what we want, and choose what we like. But beware, eating too much candy makes you sick. We have to know when to say “no” without feeling guilty.

The trait I most deplore in others is…

I try not to deplore others, but I do like good manners, and am absolutely not impressed with impoliteness and snobbery.

I’d like to be remembered for…

Being a lady.

What makes me happiest is…

Being on a private beach (I don’t like to share my beach!) with those I love.

Can I run in heels?

I can run in jewelled Rene Caovilla sandals. I hope that’s good enough? Heels are for seduction, and you never want to hurry that.
