Makeup that makes you look like the best version of yourself. Simple skincare to bring out your complexion’s natural radiance. Multi-tasking products that work super efficiently and save you time. Affordable prices that won’t break the bank. Sounds like a wish list for everything we’d want from a beauty brand. Meet Pixi – a makeup and skincare brand which is about all these things – and a few more besides.

Launched in London in 1999, Pixi is the result of founder, Petra Stand’s 20+ years of experience as a makeup artist. A Swedish native, the Scandi simplicity is evident across the entire beauty and skincare range – from the pared-back packaging to the fuss-free ethos that Pixi’s all about. But simple means anything but basic – Pixi’s innovative botanical formulations are infused with radiance-boosting, anti-ageing ingredients, designed to actively improve skin health. Flawless, fresh-faced fast beauty? Count us in. Pixi might just be our favourite Swedish staple since Ikea! We found out more about the brand from Petra herself…

What’s Pixi all about?

Pixi is 17 years old this year (I know – time has flown!) and the ethos is exactly the same now as the first day we opened our doors. We will have you looking like the most pretty version of YOU in a few fuss-free minutes. The textures blend seamlessly and are packed with plant extracts, as well as vitamins and botanical ingredients, they treat the skin and have the most gorgeous flattering colours.

Why did you set up Pixi and what were you doing before?

I am a make up artist. I had worked in Sweden, the UK and the US and I was finding it increasingly difficult to find products that subtly enhanced – that actually treated the skin. By that, I mean products that were the perfect hybrid and synergy of the best technology with natural ingredients that improved skin and were a pleasure to use. I always customizing and diluting or adding to formulations like an chemist and I had so many ideas for product development, so Pixi was created out of wanting a range that I could use professionally and yet I would want to wear.

Ask any beauty blogger/editor/makeup artist – this is the ultimate cult skincare product. Oh yes, Pixi’s Glow Tonic an exfoliating tonic which works wonders to reveal brighter, healthier skin. Do you need to use a toner? Unless it’s this one, probably not! What’s great about this – apart from the glow it imparts – is that it really is suitable for all different skin types, even more sensitive complexions. The fact that Glow Tonic doesn’t dry skin out (it’s alcohol-free) is another bonus, as some toners can leave you feeling a little tight. Use it AM or PM, it’s packed with skin-softening ingredients – think ginseng, witch hazel and aloe vera alongside 5% glycolic acid. The latest addition to the Glow range – Glow Tonic-To-Go – is perfect for travelling, with a magic pot of tonic-infused pads all ready to pop into your suitcase. Still not convinced you need Glow Tonic in your life? Skincare expert extraordinaire Caroline Hirons absolutely swears by this stuff.

Any hero products or ingredients?

Ingredient-wise I love Glycolic (an extract of sugar cane), which brightens and works so effectively on the texture of the skin – it is in the Glow family of products. I also love Damascus Rose – it smells divine and really hydrates and soothes, you’ll find it in the Rose Oil Blend and Hydrating Milky Serum. And not forgetting Peptides – they’re normally only used in skincare as they are so effective in plumping. I have added them to the MatteLustre Lipsticks and LipLift Max and they are both incredible lip treatments as well as make up must-haves.

When it comes to colour, I love blusher it really brings the skin to life and my new Multibalm sticks are such a fresh and nourishing touch of colour you can keep it super natural or build up for a stronger effect (there is even a sculpting shade for effortless contouring). I use these on cheeks and lips. Finally, there’s the Pixi Correction Concentrate – I call this my “8 hours sleep in a jar”. It is a richly pigmented peach corrector that neutralizes and erases dark circles, giving such a pro finish and blending out in seconds.

The one piece of beauty advice you tell everyone?

Use the lightest texture foundation you are comfortable with and then if you need a little extra coverage go in with concealer to the targeted areas, so that your skin looks flawless and glowing – but naturally so.

Who is the Pixi woman – or muse?

The Pixi woman is a very savvy beauty buyer. She only wants the best – and she knows her ingredients. She likes a fresh face and wants healthy skin. She is confident in who she is, lives a busy lifestyle and likes to take care of herself.

Primers. You might think you don’t need one, but ask any make-up artist, and they’ll tell you that you most definitely do! And as Petra herself is a makeup artist, you can bet that Pixi has a concise edit of perfecting primers to ensure that skin looks flawless from morning ’til night – and foundation stays put. Our favourite? The Flawless Beauty Primer: a glow-boosting pre-base treat for skin enriched with revitalising and anti-ageing vitamins. It’s a flattering pale peachy tone, and we’d even use this solo – it’s really all you need if you’re having a good skin day, or choosing to keep makeup light. Applied directly onto moisturised skin, this gives the complexion an instant radiance, while blurring pores and evening out skintone. Try Pixi’s Flawless Beauty Primer once, and you’ll wonder how you managed without it!

What’s next from Pixi?

The launches for Autumn/Winter and Holiday collections, and there is already a huge buzz about the Glow Tonic To-Go Pads. In 2017, I have some amazing collaborations lined up as well as the normal seasonal launches. This is going to be a good year – it’s so exciting!
