Part of the legendary Guerlain dynasty, Marie Guerlain could quite easily have opted to enjoy a comfortable life – and a lot of free luxury beauty products. However, Marie decided to take a different route, completing studies in fine art at Parsons School of Design New York and at the Chelsea College of Art in London. And she’s proved to be a talented artist, with exhibitions at renowned galleries including the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Saatchi Gallery. In addition to her success in the art world, Marie is also a passionate philanthropist, working tirelessly for a number of children’s welfare charities including the Marie Collins Foundation which helps victims of sexual abuse. But that’s not all – watch this space, as Marie is set to launch her own business venture before the year is out. We found out a little more about the artist and philanthropist – and what makes her tick.

Motivation for me is all about…

Believing in what you do and being passionate about it. That in itself keeps me going otherwise I would of given up a long time ago. I also visualise my goals everyday and I don’t allow myself to get dishearten when things dont go to plan. You have ups and downs in business but my motto is “you don’t achieve anything in life without hard work and taking risks”.

Success means…

Feeling good about yourself . Feeling empowered is a huge achievement which sometimes takes a while to achieve. It doesn’t always boil down to how much money we make or how high up the ladder we are. If we are passionate about what we do and happy within that then that’s success in itself.

I couldn’t have got there without…

My family especially my husband and children . They inspire me every day and give me the confidence to keep going. They really believe in me and in turn that gives me the fuel to keep going.

I always start my day with…

Hot water and lemon before breakfast and if I can a few minutes of meditation before the children get up. This always makes me feel ready for the day ahead. If I have a clear head in the morning I always have a more productive day. Then it’s organising children, school bags, breakfast and off on the school run!

When I don’t feel inspired I…

Try to relax, read a book or do anything else which takes my mind off needing to be inspired. I often find that doing just that unblocks me far quicker then trying to force it. And spending quality time with friends laughing over a good meal is a great way to relax and let go. Yoga also helps me unwind and stop thinking about everyday worries. I always try to do some yoga every week to feel recharged and re-energised.

Iron Woman Marie Guerlain

The landscape for women in business today looks like…

A far better landscape then ever before. Woman are more and more empowered in their careers and are supported in far more aspects then ever before. There is still a great deal of improvement to be made, but overall things are progressing in the right direction. I am a very optimistic person, so for me even small improvements are better then nothing . Some would argue that the landscape is still looking bleak but if we look back 20 years the changes are pretty phenomenal.

The trait I most deplore in others is…

Laziness and complaining. I feel that if one complains about one’s life all the time it just makes matters worse and far more depressing. I find that if you’re in a difficult frame if mind, making a list of all the great things in your life automatically makes you feel better. Gratitude is the key to lifting your heavy heart and opening up new possibilities. And finding something that motivates you every day can change the way you look at life.

I’d like to be remembered for…

Being a good mother and wife. If I can achieve my dreams in the charity work I do and in my creative projects then that would be a really humbling experience.

What makes me happiest is…

Spending time with my family, cooking, watching a good movie. I’m very much a homebody. I also love to travel and see the world. Different cultures and architecture really inspire me. I am always blown away at how diverse this planet and at the great beauty it beholds.

Can I run in heels?

Absolutely. I think every woman masters this tricky skill at some point in their lives – let’s face it we are the champions of multi-tasking! However, I wouldn’t recommend it for every day – I’m much more of a flat shoes or trainers by day and heels by night.
