Can you take something which is always rather lovely – and make it even more marvellous? Looking at the wittily-titled New Nouveau collection from Liberty, we think you’ll agree that yes, you definitely can! Everyone’s favourite London department store has created a new take on its iconic Iphis collection of accessories; updating handbags, accessories and scarves with floral prints from the Liberty archive.
Take two classics, add a little Liberty magic and you get something brand new – and maybe, just maybe, even better! In bright greens, pinks and blue and turquoise, the Art Nouveau-style flowers overlaid onto Liberty’s classic Iphis motif really is the mash-up that shouldn’t work – but somehow does.
Liberty’s Head of Design James Millar explains: ‘In 1960, Liberty re-released some of its original Art Nouveau furnishing fabrics as luxury fashion fabrics called the ‘Lotus collection’. It was a huge success attracting a lot of media attention internationally and was used by many leading couturiers. The story of viewing the past, and specifically Art Nouveau, through new eyes has been the main inspiration for Autumn winter 16: we’ve re-imagined our “Iphis” monogram with three archive Art Nouveau florals growing all over them.’
Made in luxe silk-satin, the skinny scarves are oh-so-easy to wear – throw on with a simple tee and jeans to give that little bit of polish to an outfit, or tie up as a headscarf or belt. And if you fancy snapping up a couple, you can definitely convince yourself you need the cashmere-blend pieces for next season, right?
Although Liberty’s bags aren’t leather, the coated cotton canvas they’re made from is actually incredibly hard-wearing – and definitely an excellent investment. Trimmed in leather with a pretty purple Liberty print lining, they’re wear-everywhere-with-everything bags. And pretty roomy, meaning they’re a practical choice too…
