Alongside MAC, Kiehl’s are a brand now fêted for their cool collaborations. But while the cosmetics company mines the worlds of music and fashion for apt hook-ups, Kiehl’s turn to artists to create alluring and contemporary labels for some of the brand’s most coveted skin and body treats.
Their ‘Annual Artist Collaboration’ is now in its sixth year, with past labels being created by such esteemed creatives as painter and sculptor Jeff Koons and graffiti artist Eric Haze. This Christmas, the much-anticipated partnership is with graphic artist duo Craig & Karl. Their NY-LON partnership – very fittingly for Kiehl’s as it embraces both the birthplace and second home of the brand – sees Craig Redman in NYC and Karl Maier in London work transatlantically to create illustrations and installation projects, including portraits of Obama and Bowie, plus a vast rendering of Manchester United players on the side of Old Trafford stadium.
For Kiehl’s, Craig & Karl have designed equally eye-catching and vibrant limited-edition labels for four of their bestsellers: Crème de Corps body cream and Whipped Body Butter, Ultra Facial Cream and Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner. The illustrations are inspired by New York City, channelling the kind of colour and energy that makes the city so unique into graphic stars, rings and dotted patterns that put an instant twist on the usual monochrome pharmacy-style packaging. For Kiehl’s lovers and new converts alike, they will be the perfect way to put a pop of colour in your bathroom and counteract cold, dull wintry mornings.
