In beauty terms, nail colour used to the very poor cousin of almost any other make-up product on the market. You might not consider going out for drinks without a slick of mascara – but nail varnish? Not such a must-have. However, thanks to an ever-expanding explosion of new colours, nail polish has become pretty much de rigueur today. As this is a (relatively) recent trend, we haven’t – as yet – seen very many new nail colour brands that have really made an impact. Meet INTENSAE. When it comes to nails, this IS the coolest new kid on the block. From the brand’s philosophy to the packaging to the range of covetable shades, it’s a name you need to know about. Who is INTENSAE?

Behind INTENSAE are a rather unlikely pair; Christian Roman and James Samuel aren’t seasoned nail professionals. And they are men – obviously! An art director/still life photographer and hair colourist, what the duo lack in nailcare experience, they more than make up in product focus, not to mention their aesthetic and visual point of view. Their mission in setting up INTENSAE was to create nail colours situated mid-way between mid-market brands and super luxe labels. You know who we’re talking about, so we’re not going to name drop. INTENSAE’s 5-Free nail products are also all proudly non-toxic – meaning that they’re made without chemicals such as toluene and formaldehyde.

They say…

“This new brand promises to deliver a breath of fresh air to the ultra feminine offerings from current nail polish brands. Style mavens will be thrilled, as INTENSAE introduce striking salon-quality colours, inspired by fascinating women such as Yayoi Kusama, Azealia Banks and Grace Coddington.”

We think…

Firstly, we LOVE the packaging – it’s chic, modern and looks slick. And the colours? Contemporary, different, inspiring – and true to the images on INTENSAE’s site. If you’re buying nail polish online, we think you’ll agree that this is very important. The début range of 21 polishes comprises shimmer, sheer and creme finishes, and the collection of colours is a considered one. Expect dramatic hues such as Fantasea (an intense, Gothic purple) and Nico (a deep plum tone) and a spectrum to indulge red nail colour fans – from oxblood (Potiche) and scarlet (Izzy) to coral-red (X-Offender) and true retro-style rouge shades (Marnie). And then there are soft pinks, elegant greys and flattering nudes. We also quite like that each nail colour is named after an inspiring female.intensae reds

The real acid test? Product quality. All of the colours are highly pigmented, while brushes are precise and deliver polish just where you want it. And they LAST. Really last.
