Erin Mullaney’s CV reads like a list of dream companies for any fashion fanatic. With stints at Harrods, Selfridges and Browns as a fashion buyer, we reckon Ms Mullaney must have a pretty covetable wardrobe too. Currently the ‎Fashion & Brand Director for trail-blazing luxury etailer Avenue 32, Mullaney actually started out in business consultancy at Accenture before changing direction and following her passion for all things sartorial. And Avenue 32 seems like a pretty amazing place to be; the site’s curated selection of  exciting, cutting-edge design talent and exclusive, desirable luxury brands is second to none. So what makes Mullaney tick? And can she run in heels? No prizes for guessing!

Motivation for me is all about…

Passion is what motivates me. If I am not excited about what I am doing or learning something every day and working with dynamic people, I lose my motivation.

Success means…

To me, success is about a work life balance at this stage in my life. I want to be totally focused at work and then be able to switch off and enjoy my personal life as well. I used to find it hard to ‘switch off’ from work in the evenings or on holiday, but now I understand the importance of giving both your equal attention. It makes you a much happier and more productive employee in the end and means you won’t ‘burn out’!

I couldn’t have got there without…

My parents. They have given me an incredible education and all the love and support I could ever ask for. Both my parents are amazing role models; in their marriage, as people and as parents.

I always start my day with…

Hot water and lemon as soon as I wake up, then a coffee when I get to work. I can’t get through my mornings without my one coffee of the day! I also love listening to music in the morning as I get ready for work – it puts me in a good mood for the day.

When I don’t feel inspired I…

Go on holiday – usually to visit my parents. I am lucky that they live in Naples, Florida which is basically paradise and I always recharge my batteries when I am there and come back feeling refreshed and inspired.

The landscape for women in business today looks like…

Exciting and promising. I have never really noticed a ‘ceiling’ for women in the fashion industry – in fact, throughout my buying career I have been lucky enough to work with some of the best women in the industry and they have taught me a lot. It is important that as we progress in our careers we continue to nurture and mentor the younger generation. Although, these days I seem to learn the most from the younger people in our company as they have grown up with e-commerce and social media and it is second nature to most of them.

The trait I most deplore in others is…

Being passive-aggressive. If you have something to say just come out with it and clear the air! It’s better to talk things through rather than let them simmer. I guess it’s the American in me that likes when people are direct and honest. I can be too honest sometimes!

I’d like to be remembered for…

Being a good daughter, good sister, good girlfriend, good mother (one day I hope) and friend.

What makes me happiest is…

Hanging out with my boyfriend and my dog Baxter. Owning a dog is very therapeutic and I feel much calmer since he came into my life! We go on three walks a day and it’s amazing the new friends you make and people you meet in London when you own a dog.

Can I run in heels?

I have been doing it for years! You have to in this business… Although now I much prefer trainers or flats – something I thought I would never say!
