There are times in life when you don’t want a busy city break, much less a hotel with zillions of activities you’ll feel obliged to take part in. Those times when a holiday means simply getting away from it all, switching off and doing little more than contemplating your navel and/or reading a good book. Maybe with an occasional cocktail or two, and definitely with some sunshine. You only really need a few days, so long hauling it is a no-no. How about year-round sunshine, a beautiful spa, no less than two swimming pools and a breakfast buffet with Cava? We’ve got just the place for you: Bohemia Suites & Spa in Gran Canaria’s Playa del Ingles.
A five-star design hotel, Bohemia Suites & Spa has all you need for a chilled-out weekend break. And as it’s strictly adults only, you needn’t worry about little Theodore and Coco splashing about noisily, spoiling your peace poolside. Plus with only 67 rooms and suites, there’s no jostling for sunbeds either – after all, what could be less relaxing? No no, all you need to focus on here is recharging your batteries – and perhaps the difficult decision of which cocktail to try next. Bohemia Suites & Spa has two pools – one which gets the earliest rays come sun-up, and another perfectly placed for a lazy afternoon of doing not much at all. See, even here, there’s no difficult decision to tax guests! And surrounding the pool are lush gardens fragrant with bougainvillea and orchids, palm trees gently swaying – pure bliss.
You may want to tear yourself away from your novel though to visit the hotel’s Siam Spa: an expansive 600m² space dedicated to relaxation and wellbeing. The luxury spa’s Asian-inspired treatment menu includes all manner of massages and body-beautifying packages plus signature facials by Anne Semonin. Decorated in deep tones with a Far Eastern theme, the spa is an absolute world away from the bright sunshiny days of Gran Canaria – it’s like an escape within an escape. And once you’ve felt the stress and tension slipping away with a rejuvenating massage, we can promise you that your desk/job/commute will seem quite another universe away.
Continuing the wellness theme, the hotel offers rooftop yoga classes – and there’s also a dedicated Wellfit space with sauna, steam room and plunge pool. We hear there’s also a well-equipped gym… Something for our next visit, perhaps!
And as for the rooms? Bohemia’s design may not be to all tastes: forget Scandi-style minimalism, rooms and suites are brightly, cheerfully decorated in vibrant, sunshiny colours. There’s hints of modern, kitschy style too: gnome-shaped tables on the balconies amuse, while chairs that double as lamps are fantastic come nightfall. Facilities-wise though, it’s most definitely five-star; from the spacious outdoor areas and walk-in dressing rooms to Anne Semonin toiletries and all the latest tech stuff. And yes there’s free wifi, but you won’t need that, will you? And then there’s that view – the Playa del Ingles with its sparkling azure sea and long sandy shoreline.
However, the best viewpoint is undoubtedly from Bohemia Suites & Spa’s 360° restaurant. The panorama of the Maspalomas dunes stretches out before you – an astonishing, otherworldly expanse of sand with the deep blue of the Atlantic beyond. A view you could never, ever tire of looking at. You don’t even need to bother looking at the menu, because you’re quite obviously going to go for the Tasting Menu with wine pairing – this is fine dining Gran Canaria-style, after all. 360° enjoys a reputation as one of the island’s best restaurants. and it’s thoroughly deserved, from the exceptional quality of the dishes and their artistic presentation to the attentive, friendly service.
We’d definitely advise lingering for a nightcap though – or taking a cocktail to enjoy the sunset from the rooftop bar. Bohemia’s resident barman really knows his stuff – and drinks are thoughtfully and creatively prepared with care. The bar regularly plays host to live acts too – adding a little sophistication for well-heeled locals and hotel residents alike.
The area around Bohemia Suites & Spa? Very little to report. Although you’ll want to wander through those amazing dunes, this a hotel where you can quite happily stay a long weekend with absolutely no need for distractions other than an occasional glance at the pool bar’s cocktail menu. And maybe a massage or two…
