Knitwear. It’s rarely the star of the sartorial show is it? And yet, your versatile, trans-seasonal jumpers and cardigans are probably some of the most hard-working pieces in your wardrobe. Layered up, worn solo or accessorised, they’re suited to day or evening, weekend or work.
Alice Ashby’s Blake LDN is a new label you need to know about. Having worked in knitwear at NYC-based label Rag & Bone and co-founded The North Circular, the Central St. Martins graduate set up her own label in September 2012. The brand focuses on high quality ethical knitwear, with a capsule-sized collection of classic pieces with a modern edge. Blake LDN aims to become a byword in ‘conscious’ luxury basics; knits are made by skilled British craftsmen using yarns (merino, cashmere, cotton and angora) sourced from high quality suppliers. The brand has already been featured on blogs including Style Bubble and South Molton Style and championed by glossies such as Glamour and the Sunday Times’ Style magazine.
While the S/S ’13 collection featured lightweight knits in a range of marine-inspired shades, for A/W ’13 you can expect menswear-inspired shapes and an autumnal colour palette of cobalt, khaki and navy blue. There are wintry details aplenty – with cosy polo necks, vintage ski-style patterns and chunky cuffs.
Pair with contrasting pieces – think lace-trimmed silk slips, leather skirts, floral prints and ornate jewellery. Or wear with your favourite pair of boyfriend jeans or dark-wash skinnies for instant weekend style. We reckon it’s time to let knitwear make a subtle statement.
