The meeting of new seasons – fashion and meteorological – means one thing for beauty aficionados: it’s time for an update. From the perfect post-summer skincare to make-up that’s cleverly formulated and mirrors the A/W ’13 trends, this is the edit of the best new beauty products to have made it into my cosmetics cache…
Lipstick fans unfamiliar with Poppy King, take note. The sophisticated and elegant Australian now resident in NYC, fell in love with her mother’s lipsticks as a child and has been passionate about them ever since. She created her first range aged just 18 and over two decades has become a true cosmetics icon. The latest collection from Poppy’s Lipstick Queen line is Velvet Rope, inspired by Hollywood’s golden era and the glamour that defined it. The pigments are typically Poppy-rich, the texture like comfortable silk for the lips, and all five colours all superbly wearable. Hell, they even taste of mint. My money is on seductively red Black Tie as this season’s sell-out.
This is the latest twist on Dior’s ingenious and incredibly successful Airflash: one of the original ‘spray-on’ foundations. For me, their brilliance lies in a super-sheer formula that isn’t too wet but offers excellent, buildable coverage. Matte Touch is designed more as a finishing touch – you can mist it over any foundation to de-shine during the day and it adds an almost soft focus element to boot. In fact this spray is so clever, just one shade suits every skin tone. I’ve also found it the perfect accomplice post-facial, when you don’t want to venture out bare-faced but a face full of make-up isn’t so appealing either.
Just landing on shelves is Cheeky – the baby sister brand from über-cool spa range Cowshed. While the hair and body line-up are as delectable as their older siblings, it’s the nail colours that have caught my eye. Each of the 21 shades is completely wearable – not a dud in sight – and the formula glides on thanks in part to the wide fanning brush. Pick up black Soots You (which will take you into next season à la Kenzo) or Take Me Chrome, an industrial grey shot with pearl that’s ideal A/W ’13 fodder.
Sadly it’s a given that the post-summer assault on skin by central heating, chilly winds and a fading suntan all tally up to generally lacklustre in the complexion department. This, therefore, is the best time of year to invest in a ‘radiance boosting’ formula that will put the pep back in that aforementioned complexion. As a big fan of multi-tasking time-savers, my latest addiction is this baby pink wonder lotion from Givenchy that immediately gives the skin a subtle luminosity while it increases microcirculation for an enhanced glow. Long term it has a botanical AHA that gently sloughs away skin-dulling dead cells and a water complex that boosts hydration and helps re-boot the skin’s energy levels. Think of it as Red Bull for your face, but in a good way.
If there’s one surefire trick for hanging onto to a season that’s long gone but not yet forgotten, it’s through fragrance. And right now, that season is summer. Whether your preference is English lavender, Sicilian citrus fruits or Caribbean coconut, a spritz of scent containing it will undoubtedly whisk you back to sunnier times. For me, Aqua Vitae manages not only to give me that summertime feelgood factor thanks to Mediterranean mandarin and lemon, but it’s also gently easing me into Autumn with rich tonka bean and vanilla combined with warm woody notes – like swapping silk for cashmere. What’s not to love?
