Beauty trends. Is it just the fashion industry telling us we need to invest in a whole load of new make-up twice a year? A cynical point of view perhaps, but a valid one nonetheless. So why should you have any interest in the latest beauty trends? You probably know what make-up suits you and already have a range of favourite products, but beauty trends are a great opportunity to try something new. And if a new lipstick makes you feel fantastic, why not splash a little cash? Read on for our edit of the beauty trends you should give a damn about this season…
Orange lips. If you’re not a fan of lipstick to start with, this is going to seem pretty out there. But believe it or not, a bold orange lip has to be one of the simplest ways to look a little more fresh, fashion-forward, modern and edgy. At DSquared², DKNY and Prabal Gurung, models wore matte tangerine lipstick with minimal eye makeup – and playing down the eyes is key here. If matte seems a bit OTT, try an orange-toned gloss to start with. Finish the look with a flick of eyeliner and a dusting of complexion-brightening blusher.
The Modern Mermaid
One of our favourite trends for summer, soft waves are sexy, effortless and easy-peasy to recreate. If you can’t be bothered to style your hair, you’ll love this trend. Surfy, beachy waves with a hint of dishevelled grungy glam were seen at Alexander Wang, Christopher Kane and Mulberry, giving the collections a more laidback feel. How to pull it off chez toi? Style your hair in a different sized plaits before bed, and wake up to tousled loveliness.
Coloured eyeshadow. Still feeling emotionally scarred from when you wore this as a teenager? It’s time to rethink your attitude – it’s pure ridiculousness to be scared of make-up. Also it’s a bit boring to just wear the same-old neutral colours all the time. A soft pastel can instantly brighten the complexion, and worn with a nude lip and swipe of liner, it looks anything but 1980s. You don’t have to wear all-over colour if you don’t want to; start by experimenting. Make-up is meant to be fun after all!
Ah ha, we hear you say! The good old trend that isn’t really a trend! Yep, you’re right, flawless skin is pretty much a perennial trend. So why are we including this one? As seen on the catwalks of Balmain, Philip Lim and Proenza Schouler, glowy skin is most definitely in. So what do you need to know, and why should you care? Well who doesn’t want flawless, radiant skin? Supernatural skin is all about using a light, dewy foundation , combined with a dab of illuminating highlighter here and there. Blemishes? Use a touch of concealer where it’s needed. Shift the focus from eyes and lips onto skin – just for a change.
The Embellished Updo
One of the most elegant trends to grace the catwalks, embellished updos ruled the runways at Oscar de la Renta, Dolce & Gabbana and Zac Posen. And we’ll be the first to admit that this isn’t a trend you’re going to want to wear everywhere. Flowers in your hair at the gym? Maybe not. In a board meeting? Ditto. So what should you take away from this trend then? Adding a glitzy clip, embellished hairband or floral corsage is a super speedy way to upstyle a boring pony tail or simple chignon. That’s it.
And the Trends not to Try…
As a bonus – these are three trends to avoid. We don’t think any explanation is needed here. If you’re unsure, try popping to your local shop for a pint of milk while sporting glittery eyebrows.
