Given that the high octane bustle of Knightsbridge has recently been ramped up by the arrival of One Hyde Park – the Candy Brother’s insanely luxurious apartment building replete with ground level Rolex and McClaren outlets – the sanctuary of a prestigious hotel spa a few steps down the road seems like a sensible number for shoppers and locals to have on speed dial. But anyone expecting the usual beauty surroundings at The Berkeley’s luxurious spa is in for a surprise. The sound of babbling brooks and ambient lighting where stubbing your toe on a relaxation bed is a distinct possibility is not Bamford style. Instead think bleached wood, warm illumination and a fresh but calm atmosphere. If Bobbi Brown owned a spa in the Hamptons, this is what I imagine it would look like.
With just a handful of sleek and spacious treatment cabins named Log, Willow and Beehive, and carefully selected natural beauty lines, Haybarn is pure rustic luxury. The well conceived treatment menu includes a selection of Bamford body experiences from hot and cold stone massage to full body exfoliation, all using products from the range that is packed with nurturing aromas, protective antioxidant ingredients and certified organic by the Soil Association.
Plump for the Bamford Body Signature Treatment: a combination of massage techniques, breathing and pressure point work. After a footbath to revive retail-weary feet, there’s a blend of Swedish massage to soften tight muscles, a focus on meridian to rebalance energy levels and acupressure on the face, feet and upper body to thoroughly relax and detoxify the body. The 85-minute session ends with a few moments of Yogic breathing to fill the lungs with oxygen and invigorate the senses. In lesser hands this massage mash-up would be a clunky hotchpotch but my therapist Sabah makes it feel seamless and even tailors the treatment to focus more on my boulder-like shoulder knots. Afterwards my skin feels like satin, posture is much improved and while my brain temporarily feels like jelly, it’s a short segue to the blissed-out elation that follows.
Beyond Bamford, the spa also offers facials by Oskia: a fantastic young British brand that takes natural ingredients and turbo-charges them for excellent anti-ageing result. There’s also an open-plan nail area for manis and pedis while you sip champagne, plus a brilliant brow and lash grooming service too. If you’ve got the cash to splash, indulge in a one-day membership package to give you access to the herb-filled Secret Garden and famous rooftop pool – the only one in West London. With a panoramic view over Hyde Park and a retractable roof for sun gazing, it mirrors the Haybarn’s theme of connecting with nature while you channel some Tuscan-themed swimming and lounging. Recovering from the hustle and hassle of Knightsbridge has never been so blissful…
