If you’re someone who doesn’t shop away from the high street too often, you’ll know what a thrill it is to splash out and invest in a designer handbag. Long-lasting, beautifully crafted – it’s a piece you spend more than you usually might on, perhaps to mark a special occasion or just to treat yourself once in a while. It’s a considered purchase – not a throwaway buy.

And then, on the other hand, if you’re someone usually seen adding yet another item to your Net-A-Porter wishlist, and dropping four figures on accessories, you might feel like just sometimes you could really opt for less spendy purchases when it comes to your wardrobe. It’s called affordable luxury – and yes, of course we know that these things are relative, so no judging please. The best affordable luxury handbags? These are the fashion brands you need to know about…

Paradise Row

Launched by former management consultant Nika Mokhtassi in late 2016, Paradise Row is a handbag label inspired the culture, history and heritage of the East End. Taking its name from Paradise Row – a pretty little street in the heart of Bethnal Green  – the brand’s handbags are all made locally, by local craftsmen, so supporting the community, while celebrating East London’s creativity. Natural vegetable-tanned leather and luxurious gold hardware, along with elegant, minimal designs are the brand’s hallmarks.

We LOVE… the charms on each of the bags which are inspired by places and people in the local area: from The Pearly in deep jet black which celebrates Pearly Kings and Queens to The Mariner (darkest navy blue), which is inspired by East London’s sea-faring past. Take a look at them – you’re sure to have a favourite!

Gvyn

London-based Gyvn is actually the brainchild of native Berliner Ulrike Seeber, who founded the accessories label back in 2014. The affordable handbag brand’s designs are simple, sleek and understated, with their clean lines and contemporary elegant look making them favourites with style bloggers and fashion insiders alike. Handmade in super soft leather and suede with minimal branding and an attention to detail in terms of finish and luxe metallic hardware, Gyvn’s bags are very, very competitively priced. Backpacks, totes and shoulder bags that cleverly convert into clutches, there’s something for everyone.

We LOVE… Gvyn’s subtle colour palette, which makes every handbag an item you can wear with almost anything, anywhere. Tones of soft taupe, pale pink, khaki green and burgundy make for a collection that feels very now – but somehow completely timeless too.

PB 0110

Designer Philipp Bree is a man who “believes in the significance of beloved objects”. Meaning? German brand PB 0110‘s minimal, structured handbags are made to last. Launched in Berlin and Paris in 2013, PB 0110’s handbags are now sold globally, across prestigious retailers such as MatchesFashion, The Conran Shop and Selfridges to name just a few. Metallics, brights and classic tones feature in the collections, with simple shapes crafted in the smoothest leather. They’re modern, beautiful pieces to last a lifetime.

We LOVE… the dove grey/silver crossbody style from PB 0110’s latest collection. Combining vegetable-tanned leather and subtly eye-catching silver, it’s the perfect size to take you from day to night. Plus the interior reveals pockets and card slots making this practical as well as pretty.

Building Block

Based in Los Angeles, Building Block aims to rethink handbags completely, with directional, striking pieces focusing on form and simplicity rather than complicated detailing; “magnifying the essential and omitting the excessive” as they put it. In practical terms, this means a considered, tightly edited collection of affordable leather handbags, encapsulating bucket bags, crossbodies, backpacks and miniature ‘phone slings’, all in sleek, minimal shapes.

WE LOVE… this season’s colour palette – an oh-so-on-trend selection including lilac, palest grey and light tan. And black of course, always black darling!

Nico Giani

Bright bargains with a sense of fun, Nico Giani‘s handbags are wear-everywhere pieces in simple shapes to dress up or down. A graduate of Milan’s Polimoda and the Studio Berçot in Paris, Giani’s bags “represent a tribute to geometry and colour”.The pared-back designs don’t mean skimping on essential details or quality however, and the soft calf leather bags are beautifully finished, not to mention fully lined in cotton, with useful zipped pockets.

WE LOVE… the impressive range of colours – from pretty powder pink and classic pale beige to brightest sunshine yellow and cobalt blue. The easiest way to cheer up a black outfit? A Nico Giani handbag.
